Le scénario attendu pour la 10e étape du Tour de France en direction de Saint-Amand-Montrond a été respecté, avec une explication musclée dans la dernière ligne droite entre les principaux sprinteurs qui dominent la scène depuis le départ de Florence. Impérial en 2023, Jasper Philipsen tournait autour d’une première victoire cette année et a saisi sa chance dans le final. Parfaitement emmené par Mathieu Van der Poel au moment de fournir son effort, le Belge retrouve ses jambes de « Master » et gagne sa septième étape sur le Tour de France en battant Biniam Girmay. Le coureur érythréen conserve toutefois son maillot vert avec une avance confortable.
Bénéfice net de 2 pts pour Philipsen au sprint intermédiaire
Après avoir observé une première journée de repos, le peloton se réunit à Orléans avec 172 coureurs, sans Aleksandr Vlasov (Reb Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) qui a été contraint au forfait en raison d’une fracture à la cheville. Les clients pour l’échappée ne se précipitent pas, le peloton avance donc groupé à allure modérée (37,2 km dans la première heure) jusqu’au kilomètre 45, où quelques formations s’intéressent à l’échéance du sprint intermédiaire. Van Gils, Van Hoeke (Lotto-Dstny) et Goossens (Intermarché-Wanty) sortent du peloton pour anticiper. Ils arrivent à Romorantin-Lanthenay (km 57,1) avec 1’ d’avance mais sans Van Gils, le sprint du peloton se dispute donc pour une 3e place qui rapporte 15 points : Philipsen s’en empare, avec un bénéfice net de 2 points sur Girmay qui le suit sur la ligne. Le peloton se reforme ensuite au complet au km 65.
Tentatives infructueuses dans le vent
Le rythme s’élève sensiblement à l’approche des 80 derniers kilomètres, mais ni l’équipe Astana de Mark Cavendish, ni la formation Visma-Lease a Bike ne parviennent à exploiter les légers vents latéraux qui soufflent avant la traversée d’Issoudun (62 km de l’arrivée). La configuration revient à l’identique pour attaquer les 50 derniers kilomètres, avec une vigilance accrue des coéquipiers de Pogacar, Evenepoel ou Vingegaard à l’avant du peloton.
Van der Poel lance Philipsen
La préparation du sprint massif ne démarre que dans les 10 derniers kilomètres avec l’entrée en action en tête du peloton des formations des principaux spécialistes. Les dsm-Firmenich de Jakobsen et les Israel-Premier Tech d’Ackermann sont les premiers à mettre leur train en place. Mais sous la Flamme Rouge, ce sont bien les Alpecin-Deceuninck qui orchestrent la partie. Mathieu Van der Poel place une accélération qui propulse Jasper Philipsen dans les meilleures conditions pour fournir son effort dans les deux cents derniers mètres. Cette fois-ci, le Belge ne connait aucun incident et termine avec deux longueurs d’avance sur Biniam Girmay.
